Survey of Doctrine: Topic: Healings today

One of the first things we read in the doctrines today is the simple fact that we have no real way of knowing whether the church is experiencing the same type and frequency of healings than were experienced in the early days of the church. The reasons why include the lack of the healings taking place in huge public displays and the lack of recording of each and every healing. However, there are a number of individual accounts of thousands of healings, including members and family members and others being healed of terminal diseases, such as cancer.

The spectacular public healings of Jesus' ministry and the early days of the church had a different purpose, namely to open doors to the spread of the gospel and to establish the authority and position of Jesus Christ, Himself. Another reason was the fact that those in Jesus' day did not have the Holy Spirit and their faith had to be stimulated by these grand miracles and healings. They were used to establish a church. Today, God is not building a huge church and the individual firstfruit now has both the Holy Spirit and the recorded Word of God to stimulate the invoking of that Holy Spirit in the forms of faith and belief.

Conclusion: Key Points:
  • Healings today have a different purpose than they did in the first century. We therefore have no real idea of what types and numbers of healings we have today as compared to then.
  • To understand the Practical application of healing today, several complex interrelationships (such as between faith and healing, and faith and medical procedures) need to be considered.
  • There is no evidence of anyone having the gift of healing today.
  • The Church vigorously teaches that there is no way of knowing in advance whether any person will be supernaturally healed.
