How many times do people start out to
read the Bible only to give up in frustration? Endless
genealogies, lists of tribes, or repetitive sacrificial
descriptions can be a sure cure for insomnia. Most
people start reading in the book of Genesis only to give
up somewhere near the sixth chapter of Leviticus.
But it's important that we do not
give up. Jesus said, "Man shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God"
(Matthew 4:4). But how can we live by every word of God
when we haven't even read every word of God?
The Bible has long been recognized as
the bedrock of human freedom. It was Horace Greeley who
said, "It is impossible to enslave mentally or socially
Bible reading people. The principles of the Bible are
the groundwork of human freedom."
Daniel Webster said of the Bible, "If
there is anything in my thoughts or style to commend,
the credit is due to my parents for instilling into me
an early love of the scriptures. If we abide by the
principles taught in the Bible, our country will go on
prospering and to prosper; but if we and our posterity
neglect its instructions and authority, no man can tell
how sudden a catastrophe may overwhelm us and bury all
our glory in profound obscurity."
Gladstone said, "I have known 95 of
the world's great men in my time, and of these, 87 were
followers of the Bible." In spite of the universal
recognition of the value of Bible reading, few
Christians systematically read the Bible.
What is needed is a goal for
Bible reading and a systematic approach to attain
that goal. With that in mind, we have laid out a program
of daily Bible reading which will take the reader
through the entire Bible in one year.
