This remarkable 1,360-acre park is so full of weird and
surreal red sandstone rock formations that it looks like
Mother Nature teamed with Salvador Dali in forming it.
Numerous well-maintained nature trails, some of which are
paved, fan through the park and offer great photo
opportunities. Educational markers are numerous and enhance
your understanding of the who, what, where and why of these
one-of-a-kind formations. Garden of the Gods Visitor Center,
located across the street from the north entrance, offers
hands-on exhibits, tours, a cafe and more. Admission is
free.

Spend a day at America's only mountainside zoo. It features
endangered species in mountain exhibits that resemble their
natural habitat. You can walk the hilly terrain or catch the
tram at one of seven stops. Hands-on contact with animals is
permitted in front of the Aquatics building—giraffes will
literally eat from your hand and zoo crackers can be
purchased at the entrance. Mountain weather changes rapidly,
so bring a light jacket.

Regardless if you are a seasoned rider, or a beginner whose
only horse experience was reading Black Velvet, this riding
center accommodates all abilities. Riders can choose from
one- or two-hour rides, or during the winter also have the
option for the three-hour perimeter ride. All horse-strolls
are guided and wander through and around Garden of the Gods
Park. Larger groups can arrange in advance for breakfast or
dinner rides. Kids must be over eight to ride.

This scenic pine filled campus with a Rocky Mountain

Enter Colorado's third most popular attraction at the North
Gate for a glimpse of a B-52 bomber. Travel six miles to the
visitor center, chock-full of exhibits, short films and a
gift shop. Tour the stunning Cadet Chapel with 17
magnificent spires reaching 150 feet into the sky. Or check
out Falcon stadium where the Air Force football team plays,
and keep an eye above where the skies are colored with
cadets practicing parachuting and flying Thunderbird jets.

The fact that this popular brewery/restaurant sells its own
T-shirts at the front entrance is a strong sign that this
place is extremely popular. The menu is an amalgam of
American, English and Italian cuisine, featuring everything
from burgers to pizzas to fish and chips. The interior is
dominated by hardwood flooring and a wall of windows.
Outdoor seating, though limited, is very popular during the
warm months. Above the dining area is a huge billiard room.
The crowds tend to be of the 30-something kind.

Anyone with an interest in mechanical things that leave the
ground will enjoy this museum. It is located in the original
art deco-styled Colorado Springs Passenger Terminal
Building. With its military setting, it looks exactly like
one of those buildings used in those 1950s sci-fi movies
when horrible, giant ants terrorized man. The focus of the
museum is on early aviation history, with an emphasis on
World War II. Since it is inside Peterson Air Force base,
you will need identification to enter. The museum is free.

From Colorado Springs Colorado
Head south on I-25 to Exit 140, right hand exit ramp. Go
over 2 lights to Nevada Ave and turn right. Nevada Ave turns
into Highway 115. You will go on Hwy 115 for about 35 miles
through Penrose and take Hwy 50 west towards Cañon City. You
will go through Cañon City and we are located 8 miles west
of Cañon City, 1 mile south of Hwy 50, on the road to the
Royal Gorge. If you are already past Exit 140, take Exit 135
(south Academy Blvd). Turn right off the exit ramp and go to
Hwy 115 (right before you go up to the Cheyenne Mtn area),
Turn left which will be south on Hwy 115, then follow the
directions as above. |
