Proverbs card 0009

Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him.
Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own conceit.

Proverbs
Prov 26:4-5
4 Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him.
5 Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own conceit.

These two verses appear to be in contradiction but actually, are not.

In verse 4 the reader is being instructed to avoid arguments with people who are more interested in attacking you and just picking a fight to waste your time.  The verse is instructing you to NOT stoop to their level and arguing back.

In verse 5 we have a completely different situation.  It describes a person who sincerely thinks he or she is in the correct belief about something.  If this is the case, it is important to answer them lest they begin making decisions based on false information.  If you do not speak, he will think himself wise.

There are good examples of Christ invoking verse 4 in his dealings with Pharisees.  In other New Testament passages, we see Paul invoking verse 5.
