Matthew card 0009

Upon this rock will I build my church

Matthew 16

Matt 16:13, 18-19
13 When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi....[the most pagan area of Pan worship at the mouth of the Jordan, whose waters came from a cave--or "hell."  Pagan gods went into hell during the winter.]

18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

Note:  Jesus chose a slab of rock on the banks of the Jordan, near the cave from which the waters came to make this statement to Peter.  Clearly Jesus is the foundation and cornerstone of the church but here, He is showing that His church will be established in this sinful, pagan world and will prevail.  Those in the gates are on the defensive, so Jesus is stating that the church--its Work is on the offensive.
